Collector’s Townhouse

A private apartment in a historic Brussels townhouse designed for a collector of antique Chinese furniture and objects. The project combines careful architectural restoration with a curated interior approach, where every piece is placed with precision and intent.

Heritage architecture and collected artefacts are brought into a quiet dialogue of proportion, materiality, and detail.

This project is all about a precious collection of antique chinese objects. Our challenge was to choose the right frame for it while respecting the historic architectural details of the building, which we carefully combined with a few contemporary pieces such as this morrocan rug, which serves as a metaphor of our intent: It was crafted following traditional methods but follows contemporary design cues.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was selecting the perfect place for each piece of furniture, ensuring that they fit the original elements of the building while still making justice to each item in the collection.

This living room provides a lot of unusual ways of seating, including a custom bench by the bay window and the chinese wedding canopy bed dating from the 19th century.

The study hosts a big collection of books, an antique desk overlooking a traditional Brussels garden and a gem of our client’s collection: A chinese art deco opium bed with rare wood carvings. We enjoyed our dual role of interior designers and guardians of our client’s precious collectibles.

The dining room hosts antique chinese cupboards from different historical periods. The bright light coming from both sides of the room offsets the dark wooden tones of the antique furniture.

The restoration of historical doors and windows was a critical part of the project. We wanted to follow our core value of designing spaces that respect their original architectural surroundings.

Every little detail counts.
